Facts and Values

The following assignment is due on July 5th by noon EST.

In a word doc please do the following (this assignment should take you about 10-15 minutes):

Type 'Facts' on one row (or column) and 'Values' on another row (or column).

Next to those words (or under them if you are doing columns) type up as many thoughts you have about what facts are and what values are.  So your paper will look like this:

FACTS: they are ____, and ____,  and ____, ....

VALUES: values are _____, and ____, and ____, ....

Once you have finished doing that (please don't move on until you have done the above--spend just 10 minutes or so on it), I want you to consider the following 4 sentences:

1. The earth is round

2. 2 + 2 = 4

3. Chocolate ice cream is better that vanilla ice cream

4. Rape is wrong

Now I want you to simply state which sentences should be grouped together.  For example, is 1 more like 2, 3, or 4? Is 2 more like 1, 3, or 4?  Is 3 more like 1, 2, or 4? Is 4 more like 1, 2, or 3?

Just state which sentences should be grouped together.  You don't have to explain your reasoning.

Comments

  1. Facts: They are true, valid, honest, proven, and reliable.
Values: They are opinions, principles, morals, standards, optional, or guidelines.

Sentences 1 and 2 go together and sentences 3 and 4 go together for me.
