Gluttony Activities
Choose one of the following
activities, do it, and write a 300-400-word reflection paper on It making sure
that your reflection includes discussion of the vice
(if you do an activity that shows up again,
you must choose a different activity)
1.
For 72 hours, limit yourself to three regular sized meals with no snacks
and only water to drink, and at least two of the three meals a day are meatless.
Reflect on how often and in what way your thoughts dwell on food and drink.
Note any time you find such thoughts are distracting you from attending to
people around you or immediate obligations, and whether you attempt to find a
substitute thing/activity for the thing from which you are fasting (e.g., you
are fasting from snacks, so you find yourself drinking water even more because
it sort of fills that snack void). Think about how often the need to
“fill up” on the object of your fast might itself be serving as a substitute
for something
2.
For each meal for 72 hours, stop eating as soon as you no longer feel
hungry. This will require you to eat more slowly than you normally do. Reflect
on how you tend to overeat or how you tend to eat too fast (or both).
3.
For each meal for 72 hours, take half of what you typically eat. Reflect in the manner outlined above
4.
For each meal for 72 hours, eat something that you normally would not
eat because you do not think you would like it even though you have never tried
it. If possible try to make the item
something that others in your family or friends tend to like.
